How do I apply powder bronzer without it looking muddy?

I normally don’t use much bronzer, beyond the Makeup by Mario skin enhancer, but I recently purchased the Hoola powder bronzer to try out.

I applied it and it looked super pigmented and muddy, which I wasn’t expecting. I tried both the Makeup by Mario F4 brush and the Morphe cream bronzer brush to apply it, so maybe I need to use a different brush? I picked some product up with the brush, tapped it on the container to take out excess and applied it along my cheekbones.

I find blush a lot easier to use than bronzer, but I’d like to learn how to apply it, so does anyone have any advice?
